Is solar energy for me?
Solar power has proven itself as an effective option for homes and businesses around the world and in South Africa. Solar power has also positioned itself as a reliable solution to challenges faced by traditional energy sources including continual price increases, uncertainty due to load shedding and infrastructure constraints, and the global push towards green and sustainable sources of energy.
How do solar photovoltaic (PV) systems work?
Solar panels absorb the sun’s energy throughout the day and convert it into direct current (DC) electricity. Most homes and businesses run on alternating current (AC) electricity, so the DC electricity is then passed through an inverter to convert it to usable AC electricity. At that point, you either use the electricity in your house, store in a battery, or send it back to the electric grid.
What are the financial benefits of solar energy?
When you install a solar energy system on your property, you save money on your electricity bills and protect yourself against forever rising electricity tariffs in the future. How much you can save depends on the size of your system, the type of solution chosen, and the electricity tariffs in your area. However, no matter the specific situation, going solar is a smart investment.
How do I find out how much I pay for electricity?
The easiest way to find out how much you pay for electricity (and how much electricity you use per month) is to look at your utility electricity bill, if you are on post-paid. If you are a prepaid electricity user, you can tabulate your electricity purchases in a month and confirm total spend and total units purchased and consumed.
Will I still receive an electricity bill if I have a solar system?
Unless you are fully off the grid (no previous or planned grid connection), you will still receive a bill from your power utility. However, you can dramatically reduce your bill (to fixed charges) with a hybrid solar system (panels and storage) that matches your current energy use.
Can I go off grid with solar?
When you install solar power on your property, you will still be connected to the grid. You will use the grid as backup power source in the event of persistent overcast weather whereby your solar system generates less than you need. The grid connection also allows you the ability to sell your excess PV-generated power to your local electricity company. It is possible to go off the grid with a solar energy system that includes battery storage, but this is only recommended for properties that do not have access to the grid.
How does solar impact my property value?
Studies have shown that properties with solar energy systems sell for more than those without them. However, your property value will only increase if you own your solar power system. Solar power increases the value and desirability of your property, both in terms of saleability and letability.
Do my solar panels produce power when the sun isn’t shining?
The amount of power your solar energy system can generate is dependent on sunlight. As a result, your solar panels will produce less energy when the weather is cloudy, and no energy at night. However, if you add batteries to your system, you can store the excess power produced during the day and use it at night.
Does solar work during power outage or load shedding?
Yes. Your solar system can be designed to work with or without grid power, and by design can be the primary power source during sun hours. During load shedding or power outage (during sun hours), the PV solar panels will continue to generate the required energy to power your load (fully or partially), depending on your system size.
What is Net-metering?
Net metering is the system through which utilities compensate you for the electricity you send to the grid from your solar system. This compensation can come either in the form of a discount you get from the power utility on your electricity bill or in the form of income for every kWh of energy sent to the grid.
Does Net-metering work during load shedding?
If your solar power system is connected to the grid, it will shut off when the grid goes down (power outage or load shedding). This is done as a safety measure to prevent emergency responders and electricity utility repair-people from being injured by the power the PV system sends to the grid.
How much will it cost me to maintain my solar system?
The operation of a professionally installed solar energy system requires minimal maintenance. Solar panels are made of durable tempered glass and require little to no maintenance for the 30 to 35 years that they will generate power. In most cases, you don’t even need to clean your solar panels regularly. All equipment used in our installations carry manufacturers’ warranties.
Is my roof suitable for solar panels?
North-facing roofs with little to no shade are ideal for installing solar panels. However, in most cases there are workarounds if your property doesn’t have the “perfect” solar roof.
Do I need to replace my roof before installing solar?
Solar energy systems can last for 30 to 35 years, and it can be costly to remove and reinstall them if you need to replace your roof. It is advised that you make sure that your roof is in good condition before installing solar panels.
Commercial Solar
Why should my company invest in solar?
As a business owner or manager, it is important to assess and understand the impact of current economic conditions on your business and its operations. Every business has different needs and there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Some companies are looking to reduce energy costs, some are concerned with power interruptions, while others worry about the environment and their carbon footprint. Whatever your motivation, solar has been proven as a reliable and sustainable solution.
How much does a solar energy system cost?
There isn’t a one-size-fits-all option for commercial solar. Every system is unique. Arriving at a price begins with your goals and incorporates key structure details such as roof space and any necessary infrastructure additions. Do you use more energy at night or during the day or you run a 24-hour operation? Our consultant will be able to guide you through the process and ultimately design a system that matches your goals.
What size solar energy system will my company need?
This question is dependent on several factors like how much energy your company is currently using and what percentage of your current electricity usage you want to offset, as well as structural factors like your roof size, shading and ground space. A solar system offsetting 70% of a building’s energy needs will be larger than a system that offsets only 30%. MiPOWA will help you determine the right size for your company.
How do I estimate my company's potential savings?
Many factors contribute to your company’s savings potential with solar. The biggest being how much energy your business uses throughout the day and what time that consumption is at its peak. These two factors alone show us the potential for energy offset, as well as the price you are currently paying for utility power. The more panels your building can accommodate, the greater the savings potential. Secondary considerations include panel efficiency, roof orientation, etc.
Are there any incentives for going solar?
As a business, you have a tax incentive for going solar, in the form of a 125% depreciation of your solar investment in the first after installation. This means that you receive an effective 35% discount on the quoted price of your solar power system, through the tax savings engendered by the accelerated depreciation.
What types of buildings are compatible with solar?
Nearly all buildings are compatible with solar, so long as the roof is structurally sound and has enough space to accommodate panels and racking. For smaller facilities with limited roof space, ground mounts or solar carports are a good alternative. You must own the building. If you are leasing the facility, the installation would need to be approved by the building owner.
Will solar panels power my building when the grid is down?
Yes. Your solar system can be designed to work with or without grid power, and by design can be the primary power source during sun hours. During load shedding or power outage (during sun hours), the PV solar panels will continue to generate the required energy to power your load (fully or partially), depending on your system size.
Is it true that solar power brings more efficiency?
Indeed. Solar power transported from your rooftop travels a shorter distance than electricity transported over long distances, resulting in lower energy losses. The chances of service interruptions are significantly minimized thanks to lower transmission complexities.
What benefit does solar bring to the national grid?
With solar you become part of the solution. One day, all solar installations may feed into the national grid. As more solar plants connect and feed into the grid, Eskom’s aggregated generating capacity will be significantly increased, bringing about increased national energy security.
